Getting The Best of Summer & Shielding The Worst

The month of May was Skin Cancer Awareness month and as we all know, June marks the beginning of SUMMER…. a time of year that everyone looks forward to because of the warm, beautiful, sunny weather! However, with increased sunshine comes increased exposure to dangerous ultraviolet radiation. So kicking off this month with a reminder to protect yourself against these harmful rays and a solution on how to do just that…. in a chic & sassy way, of course! 😉

Here are some of the health related risks associated with increased exposure to UV radiation:

  • Skin cancer (both melanoma & non melanoma skin cancers)
  • Premature signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, etc.)
  • Worsening of other skin related issues (skin tags, melasma, etc.)
  • Vision/Eye damage (cataracts, macular degeneration, etc.)
  • Weakening of the immune system

The good news is that decreasing your exposure to these UV rays is very achievable. For instance, if your current skin care regime does not include wearing an SPF on your face daily, that is something to add right away. Even on cloudy days, we are still being exposed to a certain level of UV radiation that can be very harmful over time.

Taking facial protection even a step further, I recently discovered Bluestone Sun Shields. Being from the Midwest originally, taking advantage of this beautiful weather- whenever, wherever- is a major reason I moved to the West coast. I love being outdoors but I also want to protect myself from all of the many health related risks listed above. In addition, if you’re doing any cosmetic laser treatments, peels, taking certain medications, using different topicals (such as retinol, AHA, etc.), you are putting yourself at an even greater risk of sensitivity and/or side effects from having increased exposure to your face from the sun. Cue this glamorous, private chrome sunshield to save the day:

Summer Sun Shield

This effortlessly classy sun shield blocks 99% of UV rays, is recommended by top dermatologists and I loved being able to read outside with it because not only did I know I was protecting my face but it also gave me more isolation & secrecy on this sunny Hollywood rooftop. Did I get some looking and staring from strangers? Yes. But did those same strangers later ask me where I got this? Also yes. 🙂 Here is where I found it:
